Resilience Shouldn't Be the Requirement: Reimagining the Military-Connected Student Experience
Veterans, active-duty service members, military spouses, and military children are often celebrated for their resilience as they navigate multiple transitions and uncertainty while pursuing their education. Yet there is an underlying expectation that they must continually rely on resilience to overcome institutional barriers which raises an important question: What if resilience were not a requirement for success? This institute will empower participants to reimagine policies, practices, and campus cultures in a way that reduces barriers and creates authentic spaces where military-connected students are valued beyond their ability to endure challenges. Participants will explore through narrative storytelling, panel discussion, and informational break-out sessions how higher education systems often benefit from students' resilience while failing to address the conditions that make such resilience necessary. Together, participants will identify strategies for building more equitable, responsive, and supportive institutions where resilience is recognized as a strength, not a prerequisite for educational opportunity.
